Comparison A straight comparison

Squarespace alternative

Squarespace has the best taste on the market. Their templates are drawn by people who know what they are doing, and a badly built Squarespace site still looks better than plenty of custom ones. That is a real argument, and it deserves saying before we get to the limits.

When Squarespace is the right call

Honestly, more often than my trade likes to admit. Here are the cases where I would send you there.

What Google measures

The numbers on Squarespace

Public data from the Core Web Vitals Technology Report, HTTP Archive, November 2025. Share of sites passing all three Core Web Vitals, and median page weight.

Squarespace70.39%Sites passing Core Web Vitals
Web average (May 2026)55.9%Sites passing Core Web Vitals
Astro, my stack67%Sites passing Core Web VitalsMedian page weight : 1.65 Mo

On this snapshot, Squarespace beats Astro on the pass rate. That is not a measurement error and not a detail: a hosted platform imposes its constraints on every site it serves, whereas a custom site inherits the choices of whoever built it. So the question is not which technology is fast, but who decides what slows yours down.

The differences that matter

Design quality
SquarespaceExcellent out of the box, within the limits of the template you pick.
CustomDrawn for your business, with no template ceiling. Slower, dearer.
Anything outside the frame
SquarespaceA need the template did not anticipate becomes a workaround or a compromise.
CustomThe need gets built. That is the main reason to pay more.
If you leave
SquarespaceAn export exists but is partial: some content, never the design.
CustomThe code is yours, full archive on request, domain in your name.
Cost over time
SquarespaceA subscription that climbs with features, plus paid extensions.
CustomOne setup, then a fixed monthly fee covering everything, upkeep included.
Local search
SquarespaceThe basics are there, fine work on structured data is limited.
CustomStructured data, service area, Google listing: built, not hoped for.
Who answers when it breaks
SquarespaceGeneral support, by ticket, on a standard product.
CustomMe, within 24 working hours, on a site I wrote.

No platform pricing is quoted here on purpose: it changes several times a year and with whatever promotion is running. Check theirs with them. Written on 4 August 2026 around structural differences.

The template’s ceiling

When my offer makes more sense

Your business has a constraint the templates did not anticipate, and you have already run into it.

You have neither the time nor the appetite to do the layout work yourself.

You want to be able to leave without rebuilding, in five years, with somebody else.

Local search is a real lever for you, not a bonus.

You would rather have a person you can reach than a help centre.

What “custom” actually means

Three sample layouts I designed. None is built on a theme: composition, rhythm and typography are decided page by page, which is exactly the difference with Squarespace. Each one opens for real, in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Squarespace makes handsome sites, why pay more?

Often for nothing, and I will say it plainly: if your need fits one of their templates and you have taste and time, go ahead. I get paid for two things they do not do. The first is the work itself, which you buy back as weekends. The second is everything outside the template’s frame, which otherwise becomes a fragile workaround.

Can I export my Squarespace site?

Partly. They offer a WordPress-format export that recovers some of your pages and posts. What does not travel: the design, the layout structure, the settings, and pages built with certain blocks. In practice, migrating means redoing the layout. That is better than Wix, which exports nothing, and a long way from a site whose code you hold.

Can I add any feature I want on Squarespace?

No, and that is the limit that counts. You can inject code into the places provided, which covers a lot, but those additions are neither guaranteed nor maintained by the platform and can break on an update. As soon as your need becomes a real feature — connecting to a business tool, a calculation, a client area — you have to leave the platform.

I’m on Squarespace and want to go custom.

We start from the export for content, and take down the list of your page addresses so they can be redirected and your rankings preserved. The layout is rebuilt, which is also the chance to settle what was working and what was not. The diagnosis is free and will tell you honestly whether it is worth it in your case.
